Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Engineering Manager to join a well-established food manufacturer based in South Wales. The role will be an interim position, working on a month to month basis. The company have a growing product base which is supplied throughout the UK.

 

The Role
As the site’s Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for all aspects of engineering, maintenance and security on a day to day basis, driving continual improvement of site standards through targeted projects and ensuring that Health and Safety is a priority.
Duties will include:

  • Maintain site and equipment standards to meet the requirements of all applicable legislation, regulatory and certification bodies.
  • To work with colleagues to deliver budget, revenue and profit expectations
  • To manage, motivate and drive engineering staff to deliver operational excellence
  • To work collaboratively with the site management teams, the union and external contractors
  • To maintain compliance at a site that operates within budgetary constraints and has variations in both volume and revenue

Engineering

  • To lead and manage the site engineering team across all shifts, ensuring a high quality service is delivered
  • To be responsible for all aspects of building control and plant legal compliance across the site
  • To drive continual improvement of site engineering and fabrication standards
  • To ensure a documented planned preventative maintenance schedule is maintained for all equipment
  • To deliver effective day to day engineering services in response to technical, operations, planning and business needs, minimising down-time by providing a timely response to breakdowns
  • To manage and maintain adequate stocks of engineering spares
  • To identify opportunities to improve processes and to investigate cost saving opportunities across the site
  • To develop strong working relationships with operational colleagues to deliver the site KPI’s and operational excellence
  • To investigate the root cause of equipment failures and implement corrective and preventive measures
  • To ensure that all new equipment is sourced to the correct specification
  • To support all external audits, inspections and customer visits
  • To be responsible for managing and monitoring the site utility usage and associated controls
  • To closely manage and control all relevant cost centres
  • To act as a first level decision maker for all engineering issues, ensuring senior management are informed of key issues in a timely manner.

Projects

  • To ensure the successful delivery of any site projects aimed at improving operational effectiveness, driving compliance or increasing profitability
  • To work with colleagues to deliver capital projects in the region of £700k per annum

Health & Safety

  • To maintain risk assessments, COSHH assessments and documented safe systems of work for all engineering tasks and ensure all tasks are conducted in accordance with all relevant H&S policies.
  • Ensure all relevant contractor controls are maintained
  • To ensure site services and work requests are dealt with in a timely manner in order to maintain a safe working environment
  • To ensure all engineering staff are trained and competent in all tasks relevant to their role and that all mandatory certification and authorised persons lists are maintained at all times
  • To be an active member of the site Health & Safety Committee
  • To ensure that all hazards, accidents, incidents are reported, investigated and actioned in a timely manner

Other

  • To delegate for direct reports and line manager as required in their absence
  • To be a collaborative member of the site senior management team; working together to deliver operational improvements and playing an active role in strategic decision making
  • To act as deputy for the site business continuity lead and be a member of the site Business Continuity Management Team participating in all BCP exercises
  • To comply with and enforce all relevant statutory, company and site policies and procedures
  • To recruit, induct, coach and develop competent employees through regular 1:1’s, performance reviews, training and development plans
  • Ensure all disciplinary incidents and staff absence are dealt with in a professional and timely manner and in line with all relevant HR procedures
  • To effectively and regularly communicate with all team members across all shifts
  • To provide regular KPI data and comply with all internal and external inspection and audit requirements
  • To attend training courses and drive personal development to ensure you stay informed and ahead of developments that could impact on operational effectiveness
  • To carry out any reasonable request in order to meet the needs of the business

 

The Candidate

  • Graduate calibre desirable
  • A competent professional with a minimum of 5 years’ experience at a senior level of managing an engineering team within a food manufacturing environment
  • A dynamic and innovative individual with a proven track record of delivery and the ability to work individually but more importantly as part of a team
  • A strong, motivated leader with proven experience of driving improvements in site standards and operational effectiveness
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to motivate, engage and develop people at all levels
  • A flexible approach to working and committed to occasional night shifts and weekend working
  • Experience of working successfully with accrediting and regulatory bodies and implementing associated programmes.
  • A ‘can do’ approach with a positive mind-set
  • Demonstrates high levels of emotional and political intelligence
